As the dates of the modified files were only 5 seconds apart I stupidly decided to download the saves from steam, figuring there'd be no difference.

Unfortunately what appears to have happened is that my saves have been rolled back prior to the last time I played- meaning I've lost about 4 hours of work! Luckily I uploaded my finished vehicle privately to the steam workshop, so when I view my profile I can see it, but when I view the lift menu it only shows my un-updated creations! Furthermore, I can't seem to be able to trigger syncing my (outdated) game files with steam to forcibly fix this. I'm not too mad if my game files are lost and I have to revert to an older version because I backed everything up on the workshop, but not being able to access or save creations via the lift is a big issue. Any advice or troubleshooting would be welcome. Hmm, I should have thought to try verifying the game files. Thanks for pointing it out!
As for the lift, I should have clarified my issue. When I access the lift it shows an un-updated version of my creations; they're all still there and I can build/destroy/save my creations, but the creations are outdated (they don't show any of the changes I made right before the files got desynced and I downloaded from the cloud). This means the creations I privately published on the workshop can be viewed from my steam profile, but don't show up on the lift menu.
21 February - Cokkies 79 Comments Hi Mechanics! It's been a real joy for us to hear about your experiences with the new Challange Mode. We had no idea there was such an impressive amount of skilled mechanics out there that just burned through all 40 challenges in no time! Thankfully, those 40 were just the beginning. We've only scratched the surface of what we can do with Challange Mode and next up is the Challenge Builder that makes it easy for you and your friends to build and share your own Challange packs on the workshop.
Keep in mind that you have to beat your own challenges to get them approved for sharing on the workshop. This is so we can make sure that all challenges that get uploaded can be completed.
