Compatibility with previous versions of NVivo

NVivo 12 (Windows) allow users to open and work with projects from previous versions of QSR software: NVivo 11, NVivo 10, NVivo 9, NVivo 8, NVivo 7, NVivo 2, NVivo 1, N6 (NUD*IST 6), N5 and N4.

These previous versions can continue to operate on the same computer as NVivo 12 (Windows).

NVivo provides backward compatibility—if a user with a later version of NVivo attempts to open a project in an earlier format (for example, a user opens an NVivo 11 project in NVivo 12 (Windows)), the user is prompted to convert the project to the later format. The original project is not modified; instead a converted copy of the project is created.

NVivo does not provide forward compatibility—the user cannot open a project with a later format. For example, if a user wants to open an NVivo 12 (Windows) project, they must have .NVivo 12 (Windows), or later, installed.

Compatibility with NVivo for Mac

NVivo 12 Mac projects have a different file format from those created in NVivo 12 (Windows):

NVivo 12 (Windows) (.nvp)
NVivo 12 Mac (.nvpx)

All conversion between formats must be done using NVivo 12 (Windows).

Project conversion can take a long time depending on the number of documents and PDFs and the amount of coding. We are working on compatible project file formats in the future that will not require conversion.

Users cannot open anNVivo 12 (Windows) project (.nvp) in NVivo 12 Mac software—they need to convert it to the NVivo 12 Mac format first. They can do this using the 'copy project' feature in NVivo 12 (Windows). They can also export selected items to a new NVivo 12 Mac project.

Users can open an NVivo 12 Mac project (.nvpx) in NVivo 12 (Windows) and it will be converted into the NVivo 12 (Windows) format. Alternatively, they can also import the content from an NVivo for Mac project into an NVivo 12 (Windows) project.

The Windows-Mac Project Converter is downloaded and installed automatically the first time the user does a project conversion to or from NVivo for Mac format. The download is approximately 200 MB and may take a few minutes depending on the speed of the internet connection. Alternatively, you can:

Download and install the project converter through an unattended command line installation.
Install the project converter from your NVivo 12 (Windows) USB flash drive – double-click the ExtractConverter.exe file (in the Windows-Mac Project Converter folder).

NVivo for Mac has a different set of features than NVivo 12 (Windows). If users convert their NVivo 12 (Windows) project and access it on the Mac, they may not be able to work with all their project items. Visio Professional is also offered as an additional component of an subscription. Visio viewer 2016. The Professional edition features three additional diagram types, as well as intelligent rules, validation, and subprocess (diagram breakdown). On 22 September 2015, Visio 2016 was released alongside.

While it is possible to work with a project on both Windows and Mac (cross-platform), we recommend that users work with their projects on a single platform. We recommend that users working in teams use the same version of the software (and do not work cross-platform).

Compatibility with NVivo Server

NVivo Server 11 enables multiple users to access and work on centrally storedNVivo 12 (Windows) projects. NVivo Server 11 is also capable of hosting NVivo 11, NVivo 10 and NVivo 9 projects.

NVivo 12 (Windows) interoperates with NVivo Server 10. Users with NVivo 12 (Windows) client software can connect to NVivo Server 10 and can:

create or open NVivo 12 (Windows) projects on that server
copy NVivo 12 (Windows) projects to and from that server
convert an NVivo 11 project on that server to an NVivo 12 (Windows) project

All users, who are working together in a shared project, should be using the same version of the NVivo client.

Compatibility with NCapture

NCapture is a free web browser extension that enables users to gather material from the web. Users can collect web pages as well as content from social media sites—for example, Facebook and Twitter.

Each time a user captures a web page with NCapture, a new NCapture file (.nvcx) is created with content and metadata from the web page. Users can import NCapture files into their NVivo 12 (Windows) projects.

NCapture is included as part of the installation for NVivo 12 (Windows). You can also download and install NCapture separately.

NCapture is updated regularly to keep pace with changes to web browsers an social media sites. NCapture may also be updated when a new version of NVivo 12 (Windows) is released. If you upgrade with a service pack of NVivo 12 (Windows), you should also update NCapture at the same time.

You do not need to have NVivo installed on the computer in order to use NCapture—for example, a user (who does not have NVivo) can use NCapture go gather web content and send the NCapture files (.nvcx) to another user who has NVivo 12 (Windows).

Mixed methods researchers will have something to be excited about with the latest version of NVivo. A new crosstab feature and support for SPSS data files will really enhance the way qualitative and quantitative data can be integrated within the software.

Other improvements include simplification of the ribbon and the navigation view, both designed to make the NVivo experience more user-friendly. A slight change in the terminology and organisation of tools within the interface should also make it much easier for new users to learn their way around. There are also a range of minor improvements such as new auto coding functionality, and Mac users will be delighted to know they can now easily export their codebook.

If you’re new to the software, the changes are good news. You should find it much easier to find your away around, and there are some excellent quick-start video tutorials to help you learn basic functionality.

For those of us that have been using the software for a while, I suspect some of the changes may take a little getting used to. It’s all pretty intuitive though e.g. Sources are now called Data; Nodes are located under a new Codes area; and Memos have been moved into a new Notes area. As you can now see all folders at the same time in the navigation view (see left), it doesn’t take long to figure out where your favourite feature has moved to. Other than that, the techniques of working with the software are almost identical to version 11, which will likely come as a relief for most researchers.

Should you upgrade? If you’re engaged in mixed methods research or are about to embark on your first NVivo project, then that would be a definite yes. If you’re happy with NVivo 11, then you might want to just stick with it for a little longer, but keep in mind that you will need to upgrade at some stage (most institutions will support the current and previous version of the software only). If you’re nearing completion of a project you’re probably best to finish it off before upgrading. For those of you still on NVivo 10 – it’s definitely time to move on!

As always with new releases, any NVivo 10 or 11 projects can be opened in the latest version of the software. There’s no backwards compatibility though, so you’ll need to stick with NVivo 12 once you’ve upgraded. If you’re working in a team, all team members will need to upgrade.

In terms of accessing NVivo 12, if you have purchased your own license you’ll need to contact QSR International about upgrading. If your organisation has a site license then you can expect they will have access to NVivo 12, but may not choose to make it available to staff and students immediately.
