My Yoga 3 Pro running the 64-bit version of Windows 8.1 shows the following two strange devices in Device Manager under Other devices: VirtualKbd01 and VirtualMouse01. I used to get Event Viewer warnings about Windows trying and failing to install drivers for these devices every time I booted or re-booted the computer, and since I have not been able to find any drivers or any further information about them, I disabled them, as they slowed down the boot time. According to the device events, they were first configured and started on 11 November, which probably means that they are part of the factory configuration, as I only bought this laptop in early January. Does anyone know what these devices are and what they are supposed to do and where to download the drivers? I have downloaded and installed all the updates available on Lenovo's support page for Yoga 3 Pro. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks to your suggestion, I was able to get rid of VirtualMouse01 by uninstalling Lenovo Virtual Mouse Device under Mice and other pointing devices in Device Manager and uninstalling Synaptics Pointing Device Driver software from Programs and Features and reinstalling the update from Lenovo's driver update page. Now I've only got Lenovo Pointing Device listed under Mice and other pointing devices and VirtualMouse01 has disappeared from Other devices. However, this didn't get rid of VirtualKbd01.

I've got Lenovo Virtual Keyboard Device and Standard PS/2 Keyboard listed under Keyboards, but there is no way to uninstall the Lenovo device (for obvious reasons). If I try to use the driver for Lenovo Virtual Keyboard Device for VirtualKbd01, this ends up installing another instance of Lenovo Virtual Keyboard Device under Keyboards and adding VirtualKbd02 under Other devices. I've got no idea how to proceed since I'm not able to reinstall the Lenovo Virtual Keyboard Device driver. My Event Viewer logs seem to indicate that the failed driver installation events for these two unrecognised devices started around the time when I applied the, so I assume that these unrecognised devices may be related to an older version (2.3.1.28) of the Lenovo Settings Dependency Package used as a temporary fix.

However, I've subsequently updated to version 2.3.1.31 of the Lenovo Settings Dependency Package, which eliminated the missing dll errors for me, but it didn't solve the problem with the two unrecognised devices. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the Lenovo Settings Dependency Package when troubleshooting this problem, but it failed to get rid of either of the two devices. To sum up: one of the devices is now gone, thanks to you, but the other one is still there and I can't think of a way to get rid of it. I'm wondering what would happen if I just deleted the relevant line from Windows registry, but I haven't dared to test it for fear of losing keyboard functionality.

First of all, sorry I forgot to mention that I obviously tried to update the drivers using the Update driver button in the Device properties dialog about a dozen times, but Windows couldn't find any drivers online or from the computer. As I already mentioned, when I tried to install the Lenovo Virtual Keyboard Device driver for the unrecognised VirtualKbd01 device, this resulted in adding another instance of Lenovo Virtual Keyboard Device to Keyboards and VirtualKbd02 under Other devices. Since I got rid of the Lenovo Virtual Keyboard Device, I can no longer check the driver version from Device Manager, but the kmdfvirtualkbd.inf still found in the Windows DriverStore folder indicates that the version was 14.16.7.764 (dated 5 August 2014), which sounds about right. As for the WUDFRd errors: thanks for confirming my impression – I thought as much, because I've also browsed several forums and haven't been able to find a single solution for these that would have worked. I guess I'll just leave them be.

I only became aware of these warnings when my Yoga experienced a couple of random hangs while I was busy at work – in other words, the touchpad and keyboard became unresponsive, and since nothing happened for ten minutes, the only way to recover was to do a hard boot using the power button. However, I've since concluded that the hangs were probably due to power and/or thermal management. I've changed some settings and downloaded and installed (for Yoga 2 Pro), but I can't really tell as yet whether any of this has helped, since the hangs occurred out of the blue and I couldn't figure out any particular reason for them, except that I had been working for a while and had quite a few websites and programs running, but the laptop didn't feel too hot and CPU usage stats were OK, so it's not as if the resources were overstrained or anything. It hasn't happened for a week now and I'm just keeping my fingers crossed – it's rather irritating when everything just stops responding without any warning when you're working to a tight deadline.

As for the Lenovo Phone Companion, thanks for your tip. I did find the Lenovo PhoneCompanion.msi file, but when I tried to install it, I got a nag saying that installation required a setup file. I've been searching for the Phone Companion download, but I can only find the Metro and phone apps, which I've already installed. However, this is not really a major problem, because I'm sure there are other solutions to connect my phone to the laptop. Thanks again for all your help!
